The meaning of "fi as-samaa" in ayah (67:16) and the Hadith of the Slave Girl (Al-Jariyah)

The meaning of "fi as-samaa" in ayah (67:16) and the Hadith of the Slave Girl (Al-Jariyah)

*(Translator's note: This article discusses the precise meaning of the word "fi" in Arabic as it applies to a particular ayah and hadith. Normally, the word "fi" is translated as "in" or "inside". However, this translation is inaccurate when applied to those specific texts. For that reason, I have chosen to leave the word "fi" and some other words in transliterated form (fi as-samaa) while the rest of the text is translated into English.)*

The Ayah (verse) :
Allah the Exalted said: {Do ye feel secure that He Who is (fi as-samaa) will not cause you to be swallowed up by the earth when it shakes? Or do ye feel secure that He Who is (fi as-sama)...} [67:16-17]

The Hadith of the slave girl:

Mu’awiyah as-Sahmi reported: «I had some sheep which I kept between Uhud and Juwaniyyah with a slave girl to look after them. One day, I went out to check on my sheep and discovered that a wolf had devoured one of them. Since I am just a human, (I became angry) and struck the girl. Later on, I came to the Prophet -Sallallahu alahi wa Sallam- and reported to him the incident. He terrified me with the gravity of my action. I said, "Messenger of Allah! Shall I free her (as an expiation of my sin.) He said ”Call her over.»
When I did, he asked her: ”Where is Allah?“ She said, "fi as-samaa."
Then he asked her, ”Who am I ?“ She said, "The Messenger of Allah -Sallallahu alahi wa Sallam-".
Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah -Sallallahu alahi wa Sallam- ordered me, ”Free her for she is a believer“ » [Saheeh Muslim].

The scholars have agreed that the phrase "fi as-samaa" in the ayah and the hadith of the slave girl does not mean inside the sky. Allah is Exalted above dwelling in His creation, or that the creation would surround Him. Such a meaning is absolutely invalid, and all the Imams of the Salaf are in consensus on that point. The scholars have explained the phrase in agreement with its meaning in the Arabic language, the many Islamic texts (Quran and Sunnah), sound intellect, and natural human instinct (fitrah).

The scholars explained "as-samaa" to be the Throne (`Arsh),because the word "as-samaa" linguistically means the ceiling or roof of some object, and the Throne is the ceiling of all creation because it is above all creation, and all the creation is below it.
Az-Zajjaj (d. 311 H.) said: "(As-samaa) linguistically is said about everything that is raised up and high above. Every ceiling is a 'samaa'. For this reason the cloud is called the 'samaa' because it is high." (1)
Ibn Faris (d. 395 H) said: "(As-samaa) is the ceiling of the house, and everything that towers over is a 'samaa', to the point that the back of a horse is called 'samaa'." (2)

"Fi" has been explained as (`alaa); ie on / over / above.

Abu Bakr Ahmad As-Sibghi (d. 342 H.) said: «The Arabs would sometimes use the word 'fi' to mean 'alaa' (on/above). Allah the Exalted said: {So travel 'fi' the earth} [9:2] and {I will crucify you 'fi' the trunks of palm trees} [20:71]. The meaning is 'on the earth' and 'on the trees'. The phrase 'fi as-samaa' is used in the same way, meaning on the throne and above the heavens, as it has authentically been reported from the Prophet peace be upon him.» (3)

Al-Harith al Muhasibi (d. 243 H.) said about its meaning: «It means above the throne, and the throne is above the sky, because whoever is above something which is above the sky is 'fi as-samaa'» (4)

Abu Bakr al-Baihaqi (d. 458 H.) said: "He said {Do ye feel secure that He Who is (fi as-samaa)...} [67:16] and He meant "Who is above the sky", just as He said {I will crucify you "fi" the trunks of palm trees}meaning: on the trunks of the palm trees. He also said {So travel "fi" the earth} meaning on the earth. Everything which is above is "samaa", and the Throne is high above the heavens. So the meaning of the ayah, and Allah knows best, is: 'Do you feel safe from the One who is above the Throne', just as He clearly stated in all the other ayat." (5)

So the meaning of "fi as-samaa" in the ayah and the Hadith of the jariyah (slave girl) is: Above the heavens, on the Throne.

The pronoun "man" (Arabic for "who") in the ayah is for Allah the Exalted:

- The slave girl's answer to the question of the Prophet -Sallallahu alahi wa Sallam- "Where is Allah?" was: "fi as-samaa", and he bore witness to her faith.

- Muhammad ibn Yazid al Mubarrad (d. 286 H.) said: "The question about what is understood from the word "man" (who) as in the ayah:{Do ye feel secure that Who (Man) is 'fi as-samaa' will not cause you to be swallowed up by the earth} indicated that "who" is being used for Allah the Exalted. (6)
- At-Tabari (d. 310 H.) said: "{Do ye feel secure that Who is fi as-samaa} : it is Allah" (7)
- Ibn Abi Zamanin (d. 399 H.) said: " {Who is fi as-samaa} He meansHimself" (8)
- Abu al-Mudhaffar as Sam`ani (d. 489 H.) said about the explanation of the ayah: "Do you feel secure from your Lord." (9)

Where is Allah ? Belief of Moses vs. Belief of Pheroah

Allah is “Fis-Sama” (Above the Heaven):
Is it the Belief of The Pharaoh or Musa Alayhis-Salam ?

Related Articles:

Allah Ta`ala said -translation of meaning-:
{Fir‘aun (Pharaoh) said: "O chiefs! I know not that you have an ilâh (a god) other than me. So kindle for me (a fire), O Hâmân, to bake (bricks out of) clay, and set up for me a Sarh (a lofty tower) in order that I may look at (or look for) the God of Mûsâ (Moses); and verily, I think that he (Mûsâ) is one of the liars.} [28:38]

And said- translation of the meaning-:
{And Fir‘awn (Pharaoh) said: "O Hâmân! Build me a tower that I may arrive at the ways; The ways of the heavens, and I may look upon the God of Mûsâ: But verily, I think him to be a liar."} [40:36-37]

Pharaoh used to claim divinty, and deny Musa's call that there exists a deity other than him (the pharaoh), and he wanted to prove this to the people, so he ordered his minister Haman to establish a lofty palace (a building which reaches high in the heavens) so he may reach the ways of the heavens and its doors, to look at Musa's (peace be upon him) God that he claims exists. So, was pharaoh's choice to climb the heavens based on his belief of where Musa's God is ? Or was it because Musa –alayhi As-Salam- told him that his Lord is above the Heavens ?

As for saying that the belief that Allah –Azza wa Jal- is above the Heavens is that of the pharaoh’s, and not the belief of Musa –peace be upon him-, is a claim that is refuted by the Quran, Sunnah, and reason.

As for the Quran, Allah said -translation of meaning-:
{Do ye feel secure that He Who is above the Heaven will not cause you to be swallowed up by the earth when it shakes?} [67:16]

And the Imams of Sunnah have clearified that who is meant by “He who is above the Heaven” is Allah Azza wa Jal.

And in the authentic Hadith, Mu'awiyah Ibn al-Hakam said:
“I had a maid-servant who tended my goats by the areas of Uhud and Al- Jowwaniya. One day, I passed that way and found that a wolf had carried a goat from her flock. I am a man from the sons of Adam. I felt sorry as they (human beings) feel sorry. so I slapped her a slap, then I came to the messenger of Allah (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and he made me feel what I've done was something grievous, I said: " should I not grant her freedom oh Messenger of Allah? ".
He said: ”Bring her to me.“
I brought her to him, then he said: ”Where is Allah?“
She answered saying: " Above the Heaven (fi as-sama)"
He said: ”Who am I?“ she said: "The Messenger of Allah".
He said: ”Free her, for she is a believer.“ [Sahih Muslim]

In the Hadith, the Messenger of Allah –Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam- testified that she is a believer when she stated this belief (that Allah is above the Heaven). If the belief that Allah is above the Heaven is considered kufr (disbelief), it would have been an obligation upon him to notify her of that, and not Acknowledge her on a belief that is kufr.

As for using one's intellect, the Pharaoh said to the people that he believes that Musa –alayhi assalam- is lying when he said that there is a deity other than Pharaoh, and he built the high building to prove that Musa's deity doesn't exists. If pharaoh's act was based on his belief, then it wouldn’t be a valid proof, because one can’t prove someone else’s claim to be wrong through his belief ! He has to prove it through the claimer’s own belief, so it must be according to Musa’s belief, which is Allah Azza wa Jal being above the Heavens, so he built the tower to try to reach the doors of the heavens to prove to the people that Musa -alayhi assalam- is lying, as he claims.

Also, if the act of Pharaoh was against Musa's belief, then Musa -alayhi assalam- would have refuted it by denying that he believes Allah to be above the Heaven, and he would have told him that what he is doing is a useless act, because he (Musa alayhi assalam) never claimed that his God is above the Heavens, Rather he believes that He is not there. But Musa didn’t do so.

Salafs’ and Scholars’ Statments regarding this verse:

- Yahya bin Sallam (d. 200 H.) said in the interpretation of the second ayah: “{and I (pharaoh) think he is a liar} there is no one above the Heaven, he deliberately lied.”(1)

- Al-Harith Al-Muhasibi (d. 243 H.) said : ({But verily, I think him to be a liar} in what he said to me about Him (his God) being above the Heaven. So he (pharaoh) sought him where Musa said He was, even though he believed that Musa -alayhi assalam- was a liar. And if Musa -alayhi assalam- had told him that He (Allah) was everywhere by His Essence, he (pharaoh) would have sought Him on earth or in his house and his body, and wouldn’t have prided himself with building a very high tower.) (2)
- Uthman ad-Darimi (d. 280 H.) : “In this verse there is a clear illustration and an apparent indication that Musa was calling Fir`awn (pharaoh) to acknowledge that Allah is above the heaven, that is why he (pharaoh) ordered to build the high tower, and wanted to see Him.” (3)

- Ibn Jarir At-Tabari (d. 310 H.) said in tafsir of the ayah: “{and I think he (Musa)}, in what he says about having a deity that he worship's above the heaven, and that He (Allah) is the one who supports him and grants him victory, and that He is the One who sent him to us; {is one of the liars}” (4)
And he said, explaining the second ayah : “{and I think he is a liar}he’s saying: ‘and I think Musa is lying in what he says and claims that he has a God above the Heavens who sent him to us’.” (5)

- Ibn khuzaimah (d. 311 H.) said: “And in his saying { But verily, I think him to be a liar} is evidence that Musa has told him that his Lord –Azza wa Jal- is high and above.” (6)

- Abu al-Layth As-Samarqandi (d. 375 H.) in his Tafsir "Bahr al-Uloom" : “ Allah said: {and I think he is among the liars} meaning: I think Musa in what he is saying that there is a deity above the Heaven is from the liars.” (7)

- Abu Sulaiman Al-Khattabi (d. 388 H.) said in "Shi'ar Ad-Deen":
"And He (Allah) said, narrating about Fir'awn (Pharoah) that he said:{O Hâmân! Build me a tower that I may arrive at the ways; The ways of the heavens, and I may look upon the God of Mûsâ} so the aim of the disbeliever occured in the direction that Musa told him about, that is why he didn't look for Him in the height of the earth or its width, nor did he descend to the lower layers of the earth. so it indicates, as we recited from these ayat, that Allah Subhanahu is above the Heaven (fis-sama), mustawen (i.e. made Istiwa) above the Throne, and if he was in every place, there would be no meaning to this specification (i.e. to search for Allah in direction above), and no benefit in it. *And it has been the habit/practice of the Muslims, people of knowledge and laymen, to make duaa to their Lord, while invoking Him, to raise their hands to the Heavens, and that is because it is widely known to them that their Lord Who is invoked is above the Heavens (fis-sama) Subhanahu.*" (13)

- Abo Uthman As-Sabuni (d. 449 H.) said: (And Allah –Subhanah- told about the damned Pharaoh that he said to Haman: {"O Hâmân! Build me a tower that I may arrive at the ways; The ways of the heavens, and I may look upon the God of Mûsâ: But verily, I think him to be a liar."} and he said this because he heard Musa –Alayhi assalam- mentioning that his Lord is above the Heaven, do you not see that he said: {But verily, I think him to be a liar.} meaning Musa's saying: There is a deity above the Heaven. And the Scholars of the Ummah, and the Imams of the Salaf –may Allah have mercy upon them- did not differ in that Allah -Ta`ala- is over His Throne, and His Throne is above His Heavens.” (8)

- Ibn Abdul-Barr (d. 463 H ) said : “so it proves that Musa –Alayhi assalam- used to say: ‘My Lord is above the Heaven’, and the pharaoh thinks him to be lying.” (9)

- Abul Qasim Isma`il Al-Asbahani (d. 535 H.) said: “And He (Allah) told about the Pharaoh that he said: {"O Hâmân! Build me a tower that I may arrive at the ways; The ways of the heavens, and I may look upon the God of Mûsâ: But verily, I think him to be a liar."}, so Pharaoh understood from Musa that he affirms a God above the Heaven, and he even tried to look at Him by the means of his high tower, and he accused Musa of lying in that (i.e. There being a god above the Heaven).“ (10)

- Ibn-Qudamah Al-Maqdisi (d. 620 H.) said in the interpretation of the second verse: “Meaning: ‘I think Musa is lying in claiming that Allah, his God, is above the Heaven'. And the opposer in this issue denied this, and is claiming that Musa is a liar in this (i.e. that Allah is above the Heaven) by certainty. In addition, he is apposing the Lord of the worlds, implying that his truthful and trustworthy Prophet –sallallahu alayhi wa sallam- has erred; and leaving the way of the Sahabah, Tabi`een, the previous Imams, and the rest of creation. And we ask Allah to keep us safe from the innovations in religion by His Mercy, and to guide us to following his path.” (11)

- Ad-Dhahabi (d. 748 H.) said: “Meaning: ‘I think Musa a liar in that his God is above the Heaven.’ And if Musa didn’t call him to believing in a God above the Heaven, he (Fir`awn) wouldn’t have said that; for if Musa said to him: ‘The God I call you to is not above the Heaven’, pharaoh’s saying would have been useless/in vain, and his building of a high tower would be insanity.” (12)

These two ayat were also quoted by several of the Pious Salaf as evidence for Allah’s elevation (Uluw) above the Heavens, above the Throne.

Are the Statements of the Pious Salaf -on Allah's Elevation- About Status or Essence ?

Are the Statements of the Pious Salaf -on Allah's Elevation- About Status ?

Contention:

The Statements of the Pious Predecessors about Allah’s elevation point to status, so their saying: Allah is above the Throne and above His creation means: He is above it with His dominion and such, it does not mean that Allah is literally above the Throne and all of creation.

ANSWER:

All Praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and Companions;
If one looks at the statements of the Righteous Salaf and studies them carefully, he would see that their statements regarding Allah’s elevation point to the elevation of the Essence, and not that of status, in addition to their belief in Allah’s high status.
What follows is an explanation of how that is:

1. Through the context, where their speech wasn’t about status, for example:

- The Sahabi Abdullah Ibn Masud –May Allah be pleased with him- said: «Between the lowest heaven and the one after it is the distance of five hundred years, and between every two heavens is the distance of five hundred years, and between the seventh heaven and the Kursi is the distance of five hundred years, and between the Kursi and the water is the distance of five hundred years, and the Throne (Arsh) is above the water, and Allah the Almighty is above the Throne (fawqa Al-Arsh). And nothing is hidden from Allah of your deeds.» And in another narration «He knows what you are upon». (1) Its grading is: hasan.
- Ahmad Ibn Hanbal (d. 241 H.) : Abu Yusuf bin Musa Al-Qattan said: "It was said to Abu Abdullah Ahmad ibn Hanbal: ‘Allah –Azza wa Jal- is above the seventh Heaven on His Throne separate from His creation, and His Ability and Knowledge is everywhere?’
He replied: «Yes, (He is) over the Throne, and no place is free from His Knowledge.»” (2) Sahih
- Khushaish bin Asram (d. 253 H.) said in “Al-Istiqamah” : «If He (Allah) was on earth like He is above the Heavens, nothing would come down to earth from the Heavens, but it would ascend from the earth to the Heavens like it descends from the Heavens to the earth, and there have come reports from the Prophet – Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam- that Allah is above the heavens and not the earth.» (3)

2. Their explicit saying: “with His Essence” (bi-dhatihi), and the testification of the scholars who came after them of that, for example:

- Abu Ja`far bin Abi Shaybah (d. 297 H.) said: «He is above the Heavens and above the Throne by His Essence (bi-dhatihi) free from His creation, separate from them. His Knowledge is in His creation, they cannot leave His Knowledge. » (4)
- Abu Umar At-Talamanki Al-Maliki (d. 429 H.) said in “Al-Wusul Ila Ma`rifat Al-Usul”: “The Muslims from Ahl As-Sunnah are upon consensus that the meaning of His saying: {And He is with you (by His Knowledge) wheresoever you may be} [57:4] and what is similar to it from the Quran is: by His Knowledge, and that Allah –Ta`ala- is above the Heavens by His Essence (bi-dhatihi), Mustawen (I.e. Done Istiwa, Has Risen) above His Throne however He willed. And Ahl As-Sunnah said regarding His saying: {The Most Gracious over the Throne Istawa (Rose)} [20:5]: That the Istiwa from Allah on the Throne is upon the haqiqah (literal), and not majaz (metaphorical).” (5)
- Abu Nasr As-Sijzee Al-Hanafi (d. 444 H.) said in “Al-Ibanah”: “Our Imams such as Sufyan Ath-Thawri, Malik, Hammad bin Salamah, Hammad bin Zayd, Abdullah bin al-Mubarak, Al-Fudail bin `Iyad, Ahmad bin Hanbal, and Ishaq bin Rahwaih, are upon agreement that Allah –Subhanahu wa Ta`ala is by His Essence (bi-dhatihi) above the Throne, and His Knowledge is everywhere.” (6)

3. The Pious Salaf’s interpretation of “al-Istiwa“ to mean: Rise above (`alaa), and ascended (irtafa`a). And “al-istiwa” by the meaning of uluw (elevation/rising) can only be a literal uluw by the Essence. As for uluw in status, it is not one of the meanings of al-Istiwa in the Arabic language. The following are some of the authentic statements of the pious salaf on the meaning of “Istawa” :

- Mujahid (d. 102 H. / A Tabi`ee) said: «Istawa (meaning) : Rose (`alaa) above the Throne.» (7)
- Bishr bin Umar Az-Zahrani (d. 207 H.) said: «I heard more than one of the commentators (scholars of tafsir of the Quran) say: "{Ar-Rahman above the Throne Istawa}: Ascended (Irtafa`a)”.» (8)
- Abu Al-Abbas Tha`lab (d. 291 H.) said: «{Istawa over the Throne}Rose above (`alaa).» (9)

4. Their interpretation of this ayah: {And Fir‘aun (Pharaoh) said: "O Hâmân! Build me a tower that I may arrive at the ways; The ways of the heavens, and I may look upon the Ilâh (God) of Mûsâ (Moses) : But verily, I think him to be a liar.} [40:36-37], please see their statements here: http://as-salaf.com/article.php?aid=69〈=en
And some of them used it as evidence for Allah’s elevation above His creation when discussing the topic.

5. Their statements were a reply to the Jahmiyyah who believed that Allah Ta’ala was literally everywhere, so they replied to them that Allah is not everywhere, but above His Throne. If they had meant by it: His status, then it would not have been a reply to their belief, because the Jahmiyyah did not negate Allah’s high status in order for the Salaf to reply back that Allah has higher status than the Throne !
Examples:

- Ibn Al-Mubarak (d 181 H.) : Ali Ibn al-Hasan Ibn Shaqeeq reported: I asked Abdullah Ibn al-Mubarak: “How are we to know our Lord –Azza wa Jal-? ”
He replied: «He is over the seventh Heaven over His Throne. We do not say as the Jahmiyyah say: that He is here on the earth.» (10) Sahih.
- Jarir Ibn Abdul-Hamid Ad-Dabbi (d. 188 H.) said: «The beginning of the speech of the Jahmiyah is honey, and the end of it is poison, verily they are only trying to say: that there is no ilah (diety) above the heavens.» (11)
- Sa`eed bin `Aamir Ad-Dab`i (d. 208 H.), one of Imam Bukhari’s teachers, said: «The Jahmiyyah have said worse than the Jews and Christians, the Jews, Christians and the people of religions have agreed that Allah –Tabaraka wa Ta`ala- is over the Throne, and they (the Jahmiyyah) said: ‘There is nothing over the Throne.'» (12) Sahih chain.

6. Their saying: “above the heavens and not the earth“, because if they meant elevation of status, then their saying would be a negation of Allah’s high status above the earth, which is a fault/defect.
Examples :

- Khushaish bin Asram (d. 253 H.) said in “Al-Istiqamah” : «And Jahm denied that Allah is above the heavens without being on the earth, and the Book (The Quran) is evident in that Allah is above the heaven and not the earth …» (13)
- Abu Bakr bin Abi `Asim (d. 287 H.) said in “As-Sunnah” :«Chapter: What was reported regarding Allah being above the heaven without (being on) the earth.”, then he narrated the hadith of the slave girl in which the Prophet - Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam- asked her “Where is Allah?” (14)
- Ibn Abi Zayd Al-Qairawani Al-Maliki (d.386 H.) in “al-Jame` “: “What the Ummah has agreed upon from the matters of religion, and from the Sunnah which its opposition is bidah and misguidance, is that Allah -Tabaraka Ismuh- …” He then mentions a number of beliefs, one of them being:
“And that He is above His Heavens on His Throne and not His earth, and that He is everywhere by His Knowledge.” Then he says at the end:
“And all that we have mentioned previously is the belief of Ahl As-Sunnah and the Imams of the people in fiqh, and Hadeeth, and all of it is the belief of (Imam) Malik, from him it has been reported, and it is known from his madhhab.” (15)
